There have been over 40 reported sightings of Bigfoot in New Jersey, dating as far back as 1894. While that is not a record setting amount, it does indicate that something may be going on. Many more people may have seen something but are reluctant to come forward with their claim for fear of ridicule by friends and neighbors.
Sighting reports from around the state, along with some footprint evidence, unexplained vocalizations and sounds, suggests that Bigfoot may indeed be visiting, or perhaps even residing in the Garden State.
The idea that giant primates, as they are considered by top cryptozoologists and researchers, may exist unseen by humans is not so far fetched when one takes a broader look at our surroundings. Much of the dense wilderness of North America is unexplored. Contrary to popular belief, mankind has not been everywhere. There are many miles of wide open wilderness where an unknown creature may exist, especially if they keep out of sight when humans are around, and tend to blend in to their surroundings.
There are many such areas in New Jersey. The Pine Barrens and woodlands of Central and South Jersey, and the dense forests in Passaic and Sussex Counties. Many sightings have occurred in these areas, the most recent in 2002 when an Essex County woman saw an ape-like creature running along her backyard fence.
In 2000 a camper in Warren County heard tree knocking and saw a shadowy silhouette in the woods, illuminated by his campfire.
The oldest reported sighting was in 1894, when a "wild man" was seen by six people in Dover, New Jersey.
Though inconclusive, other potential evidence includes footprints, sounds and odors, which some of the witnesses have encountered along with a sighting. At the very least, the reported sightings need to be recorded and investigated when possible.
There is now a reporting center specifically created to collect and investigate reported sightings in New Jersey. If you, or someone you know, has seen anything to suggest a Bigfoot presence, either tracks, sounds, or actual sightings, please post your report to the NJ Bigfoot Reporting Center. Your contact information will be kept confidential and used only to follow-up on the report, it will not be made available to the public.
